The Would Be Cartoonist…

Super Friends #5

So, I hear you cry, Super Friends #5 — what’s so special about that then?

Well, the comic itself, published in June 1977, is not particularly outstanding, being a kind of junior take on the Justice League of America, written by E Nelson Bridwell and drawn by Ramona Fradon. Based on the cartoon of the same name, it’s a fun, undemanding read, aimed at the younger reader. What is interesting is what else it contains…

The first letter on the letters page is from a girl called Colleen Doran:

Colleen Doran's letter

As you can see, in the letter she mentions that she “want(s) to be a cartoonist, so (she) pays close attention to the comics, and studies and copies constantly.”

I wonder whatever happened to her?

And, no, you at the back there — don’t try writing to her, she no longer lives at that address. Blackie still lives next door though.

I particularly love the “Heck, no!” in that letter. That is SO Colleen, even today..! :)

What say I dig out Colleen’s X-Men fan letters? Or Frank Miller’s early missive from 1972? Or the letters page where the great Richard and Wendy Pini romance began..? So much to do, so little time.

LOL! On the one hand, it’s SO Colleen, especially the art critique. And on the other hand, it’s kind of hilarious and horrifying to read the ’70s/80s lettercol lingo and realize … Colleen Doran wrote that. It makes me glad that none of the various fan letters I’ve written were ever reprinted anywhere. I just hope to God that Colleen never read and/or threw away the fan letters that I wrote *her* when I was about 13 and dumb as a rock …

    Hey, Colleen keeps everything

Now that is something to think about. I think all of my questions have been put to the board though so I’m safe. Though I did send her fan art…that is likely to sneak up on me one day. :)
